There’s no monthly cost for WiFi, but you have to get an AT&T or Verizon service with the 3G versions. There are lots of free apps, just check the AppStore tab on the iTunes store. For iPad/service pricing: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipad/family/ipad/select?mco=MjE0OTI0MDI

You can buy the entry-level iPad for $ 499 and use WiFi to access the Internet for no recurring fees. If already have WiFi at your house or work or school, and you do not plan to use the iPad outside of the range of a WiFi hotspot, this is a much more economical option.

You can buy the entry-level iPad with 3G for $ 620 and access the Internet everywhere you can get a cell signal from either AT&T or Verizon. In the US, you do not have to purchase a long-term contract. Instead, you can pay per month ($ 15 to $ 80 per month, depending on carrier and data plan).

Apps: Tons of good ones are available for free. Free and for-purchase apps install the same way. Apple nailed the installation process via their AppStore — very simple. The for-purchase apps tend to be very inexpensive too, btw: $ 0.99 is common, and most are under $ 5.
